Obstacles to Prayer

On Sunday, Jared asked the congregation to share what makes praying hard?  When you try to pray, what obstacles do you meet?  Here are some of those comments.

  • The language of prayer seems like “stained glass” English, praying that doesn’t fit my life.
  • If God’s will is what will be done, then what’s the point of my praying?
  • When you’re praying, it’s hard to know whether God is hearing your prayers.  How would you know?
  • I don’t like praying out loud, praying in public.
  • I can pray for other people.  But I always feel guilty praying for myself.
  • I’m always praying for myself, and it feels selfish.
  • I’m never alone. There are always people around me.  No solitude.
  • I find myself lying to God
  • My praying often feels untruthful.
  • My mind wanders.
  • Doesn’t God already know what I’m going to say?

Why I Write… Shawn LaSota

I write because it is my need as a human being to create. I write for the same reason I do wood working or paint pictures or write music. It is in our nature to create, to model God in a way. Because putting one word in front of another is the simplest way I can think of to create my own world, my own universe. It my way of speaking to the universe and the best way for the universe to understand what I’m saying. I write because I have to, because I wouldn’t know what to do with a life without it.
